Our Mission in Action

At 98 years, Springhill resident and World War II veteran Don Grumblatt is known for his sharp wit, warm smile, and his legendary cannonball splash at the community pool. While Don may have some impressive genes, he’s quick to also credit the support and engagement he receives from living in a vibrant senior living community like Springhill.

Research shows that senior living communities help combat loneliness, encourage physical activity, and enhance mental and emotional well-being by fostering a sense of belonging. They also open doors to unique opportunities—like Don’s recent chance to meet Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes.

This memorable moment happened because of the bond between Don and Springhill sales liaison Susan Sherwood. Susan shared Don’s poolside cannonball story with an Erie News advertising salesman, which led to a feature on the station’s veterans series. The story caught the attention of Paul Skenes, who was so inspired that he wanted to meet Don, so he invited him to attend a Pirates game.

Accompanied by Susan and Springhill’s director of well-being, Katie Mackenzie, Don, and his girlfriend traveled to Pittsburgh for a special meeting with the pitcher, complete with prime seats to watch the game. The experience was covered by Erie News TV and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, putting Springhill in the spotlight. This is a shining example of how the relationships between residents and associates bring our Mission to life—exploring possibilities to live your best life—while fulfilling our Value Proposition of creating inspired connections and experiences.

From the pool to the ballpark, Don’s story illustrates the meaningful impact Asbury associates have on residents’ lives. Their dedication makes a difference every day, creating lifelong memories and keeping the spirit of living your best life alive, no matter your age.
