Sharing the Joy of Movement through Philanthropy

This 2015 story from our Asbury Foundation FOCUS Magazine archives is one of many inspiring stories sharing the actions of our donor family.

At age 95, Hillert Vitt is determined to get his afternoon exercise in at the Vitt Fitness Center at Springhill, recently dedicated in his honor.

Hillert stepped forward as a leader to support the Lifestyle Enhancement campaign, recognizing how important it was to Springhill. His wife, Lorraine, noted, “Hillert has always been a fitness enthusiast and careful about his diet too. What is now at Springhill is ideal; residents don’t have to leave Springhill to stay active. It has all the exercise equipment and personal support one would need.”

Like many residents of Springhill, Hillert worked for General Electric. He was hired in 1949 and had various assignments in design and control systems. He also served as an adjunct professor in the Engineering Department of Gannon University.

A man of many talents, Hillert is a violinist and was a member of the Erie Philharmonic Orchestra and Erie Chamber Orchestra. Asbury Foundation President Doug Myers said, “The improvements made in the last year would not have been possible without the generosity of many donors. I am especially pleased Hillert Vitt could be honored with the naming of the Fitness Center.”
